A non-woven web (3) is consolidated by needle punching using rollers (6) fitted with curved needles (7) and a vibration generator (8). The compacting action of the needles in the longitudinal direction arises from the different entry and exit angles into the web. The compacting action in the transverse direction is caused by the vibration of the needles.
