Process involves inserting two adjacent corners of an item into two clamps which move transversely in front of a feed conveyor. The clamps form part of a spreader unit (11). The top edge (40) of an item is brought into a measuring position defining two sides of a triangle before the edge is made taut. The length of the top edge (4) is registered from this position and the clamps (18, 19; 20, 21) are moved in a controlled way in accordance with the registered length.
