PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having a wide antibacterial spectrum, showing excellent efficacy against wheat mildew above all, excellent in residual effect and rain proofness, and useful as a germicide for agriculture and horticulture. SOLUTION: This new compound is expressed by formula I [wherein, R1 and R2 are each a 1-6C alkoxy or the like; X is H, a halogen or the like; Y is a halogen, nitro or the like; and (n) is 0 to 3], e.g. 5-chloro-1-(4,6- dimethoxy-[1,3,5]triazin-2-yl)-2-methylbenzimidazole. The compound of formula I is obtained from a starting compound of formula II (wherein R3 is amino or the like) e.g. by heating the compound [e.g. 4-chloro-N'-(4,6- dimethoxy-[1,3,5]triazin-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diamine] of formula II in a carboxylic acid (e.g. acetic acid) of the formula XCO2H, if necessary, in the presence of an acid anhydride (e.g. acetic anhydride) preferably at a temperature from room temperature to the boiling point of the carboxylic acid.
