PURPOSE: A styrene-butadiene based latex for a paper coating binder is provided to attain excellent adhesiveness, stiffness, and foamability resistance, which is useful for production of light coating paper. CONSTITUTION: The styrene-butadiene based latex is comprised of a soft core and a hard shell, where the soft core being comprised of 16-23 wt.% of butadiene, 29-62.2 wt.% of styrene, less than 10 wt.% of acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate, respectively, and 37-44 wt.% of specific glass transition temperature monomers, and the hard shell being comprised of 7-13 wt.% of butadiene, 29-62.2 wt.% of styrene, less than 10 wt.% of acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate, respectively, and 27-33 wt.% of specific glass transition temperature monomers. In overall, the styrene-butadiene based latex is comprised of 26-33 wt.% of butadiene, 45-66 wt.% of styrene, less than 10 wt.% of acrylonitrile and methylmethacrylate, respectively, 1-4 wt.% of itaconic acid, 0.3-3 wt.% of acrylic acid, less than 3 wt.% of methacrylic acid, and less than 2 wt.% of fumaric acid. Also, the glass transition temperature of the soft core is 5-20 deg.C higher than that of the hard shell.
