The present invention provides a method for treating acne vulgaris by serial ly applying a topical composition of azelaic acid and a topical composition of benzoyl peroxide. The present invention also provides topical compositions o f a peroxide of benzoyl peroxide, and azelaic acid and its derivatives, such a s azelaic acid, sodium salt or methylester which are useful for treating acne vulgaris and may be used to simultaneously apply benzoyl peroxide and azelai c acid.
