PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent unnatural image generation which does not match with the color temperature of a photographing environment and to provide appropriate images by variably setting a luminance extracting area, based on the lightness information of an object in a control means. SOLUTION: When the object includes prescribed colors, such as a skin color, green and blue, a controller 109 sets an area between a luminance limit value U and luminance MU and the area between the luminance ML and the luminance limit value L, for which the area between the luminance MU to ML of the prescribed colors such as the skin color, green and blue different from the color data of achromatic color images by the color temperature, is excluded from a normal luminance extracting area between the limit values U and L of an initial high luminance side and a low luminance side as a luminance extracting area. Then, the controller 109 extracts image color data for white balance control within the set luminance extracting area and extracts achromatic color change color data by the color temperature. Also, corresponding to the lightness information of the object and image pickup screen color temperature information, the area between the luminance MU to ML of the prescribed color is moved and set, and highly accurate image color data for the white balance control are extracted.
