PURPOSE: A split type air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to easily perform pump down and improve durability and performance of a compressor and cooling efficiency by smoothly circulating refrigerant and oil by having an oil collecting device. CONSTITUTION: A method for control a split type air conditioner includes a first step of circulating a refrigerant by driving a compressor and simultaneously flowing some of a refrigerant of high temperature around a condenser directly to an inlet part of the compressor via a bypass tube, shutting off the bypass tubes after performing the first step for a predetermined time, and performing cooling of a room via an evaporator, a third step of shutting off an outlet part of the condenser and performing pump down by stopping the compressor if a room temperature is continuously higher than a desired temperature after performing the second step for a predetermined time, and fourth step of opening the outlet part of the condenser and returning to the first step after performing the third step for a predetermined time.
