In a compact interferometer, a beamsplitter (2) divides incident light (1) into reflected and transmitted light which travel along orthogonal optical paths. The reflected light is reflected by a first reflector (3) and the transmitted light is reflected by a second reflector (4). The light reflected by the two reflectors (3, 4) is recombined by the beamsplitter (2) and falls on a photodetector (5). A third reflector (6) reflects the incident light at right angles to the beamsplitter, and a fourth reflector (7) reflects the light transmitted through the beamsplitter at right angles to the second reflector (4). The beamsplitter and the third and fourth reflectors (6,7) are mounted on a member (8) movable along an optical path extending between the first reflector (3) and the photodetector (5). Alternatively the first and second reflectors may be mounted on a movable member. Further, the reflectors (3,4) may be mounted on moving means which synchronously moves the first and second reflectors in opposite directions so as to approach or depart from each other, whilst the beamsplitter remains in a fixed position.
|
