PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alpha-olefin random copolymer in high productivity by copolymerizing two or more kinds of specificα-olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising a specific transition metal imine compound and a specific compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing an alpha-olefin random copolymer comprises copolymerizing (A) two or more kinds ofα->=3C olefins in the presence of (B) a catalyst comprising (i) a transition metal imine compound of the formula [M is a transition metal in the groups 8-11 in the periodic table; R1-R4 are each H, a halogen, a (halogenated) hydrocarbon, an oxygen-containing group or the like; R5, R6 are each a halogen, a (halogenated) hydrocarbon, an oxygen-containing group or the like, provided that R1 and R5, R2 and R6, R1 and R3, R2 and R4, and R3 and R4 may each be bound to each other to form a ring; (n) is the valency of M; X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C (halogenated) hydrocarbon or the like; Y is an atom in the groups 15-16 in the periodic table; Y is an atom in the groups 15-16 in the periodic table] and (ii) one or more kinds of compounds selected from organic metal compounds, organic aluminumoxy compounds and compounds each capable of reacting with the component i to form an ion pair.
