PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element capable of reducing the threshold which is increasingly lower and a process for producing the same. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element is arranged with a plurality of substrates 1 having liquid crystal alignment layers 3 opposite to each other apart a prescribed spacing on the side of the liquid crystal alignment layer and is disposed with liquid crystals within this spacing. In such a case, diagonally vapor deposited SiOX films as the liquid crystal alignment layers are subjected to a surface treatment by a higher alcohol, by which the surfaces thereof are so reformed as to change the interaction with the liquid crystal material and consequently, the threshold of the liquid crystal element is reduced. |
