PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing having high hardness and capable of preventing the generation of abnormal sound caused by surface roughening and uneven wear by composing at least either a bearing ring or a rolling element of steel having one or more kinds of compound layers selected from the group of FeB, VC and TiC on the surface layer. SOLUTION: Preferably, the surface layer has >=1400 Hv hardness, the side inward than the surface layer has >=700 Hv hardness, the surface layer has at least 5μm thickness, and the compd. layer is composed of a single layer. On the surface of the steel, one or more kinds selected from the group of B, V and Ti are diffused to form the compd. layer, and, after that, quenching and tempering treatment are executed to form at least either a bearing ring or a rolling element. Moreover, at least either the bearing ring or the rolling element is preferably subjected to finish treatment after application of the quenching and tempering treatment. Thereby, a bearing high in bearing strength, excellent in a rolling service life as well, and capable of securing the adhesion between the surface layer and the base, working precision and mass-productivity can be obtd.
