TRUNK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS

A system is dislosed for allowing the stations of a telecommunications trunk to communicate with one another, and with a control centre, using IP addresses and packets on the trunk service line. This is effected by the use of service packets or headers having short (preferably single-byte) station addresses so that the service packets can be routed by low-level routines without the need to buffer or examine each IP packet. When the service packets reach their destinations, the IP packets can be extracted and processed by IP-capable remote site controllers at each station. As a result, communication between the control centre and any station can be conducted transparently using higher level protocols such as SNMP/UDP/IP. A method of monitoring alarms at trunk stations using this communications system is also disclosed.
