An arrangement for measuring the position of a linearly moving body wrt. a reference body using digital absolute measurement value acquisition has a hollow cylindrical digital scale (12) on the wall of a hollow chamber (4) inside the moving body and with its axis (6) parallel to the movement direction. A measurement head (2) with coincident axis attached to the reference body contains a light source (8) with main beam direction along the cylinder axis. A rotation elliptical mirror (10,11) is suitably arranged concentric to the axis. USE - Esp for continuous hydraulic cylinder piston position measurement, e.g. for hydraulic dampers.
