The motion of a roller cam-follower (5,16) is imparted to an inlet valve push-rod (4) by a piston (7) provided that opposed spring-loaded locking pistons (11), contained within a single bore (10) of the piston (7), are engaging recesses (13) in the cam-follower stem (5). Oil pressure applied via a bore (14) forces the locking pistons inward and disengages the cam-follower from the push-rod.
