PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production process in which nicotinic acid, an important additive for food and fodder, can be converted from ammonium nicotinate without using any auxiliary feedstock and producing any waste. SOLUTION: Nicotinic acid is produced by spray drying of an aqueous solution of ammonium nicotinate. The resultant nicotinic acid is treated to remove ammonia in a fluidized bed spray dryer or by heat treatment under a reduced pressure. This process is especially appropriate for the finishing step, i.e., treatment of a reaction product mixture obtained by air oxidation of 3- melhylpyridine. Ammonia and, if adequately treated, water can be recycled. |
