The vehicle (1) has rear doors (2) and a load floor (3). The lift mechanism is stored in a compartment (5) under the floor, when not in use. The mechanism is deployed and retracted by hydraulic cylinders. The platform (7) of the mechanism is withdrawn horizontally on runners (9). The wheelchairs or cargo pallets are rolled or slid out onto the platform. A scissors trestle assembly (8,11) then lowers the platform to the ground.
