The invention provides a substance acting on a retinoid receptor which has a retinoid-like activity or an action of controlling retinoid activities, for example, enhancement or suppression. Compounds represented by the following general formula (I) wherein R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, and R<5> independently represent hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, or two adjacent groups selected therefrom may combine together with carbon atoms of the phenyl ring to which they bind to form a 5- or 6-membered ring which may optionally be substituted with one or more alkyl groups; and X represents a group represented by -C(R<6>)=CH-, -CH=C(R<7>)-, -N(R<8>)-CO-, -CO-N(R<9>)-, -C(=CHR<10>), -CO-, or -NR<11>-wherein R<6>, R<7>, R<8>, R<9>, R<10>, and R<11> independently represent hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group. <CHEM> |
