PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image pickup device provided with the feature of transmissive scatter-type liquid crystal where a light transmittance is high and wave length band width is wide by constituting a shutter through the use of transmissive scatter-type liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A diaphragm 4, a lens 3 and a liquid crystal shutter 1 are placed in front of a CCD camera 2 in this order and a distance between the diaphragm 4 and the lens 3 and that between the lens 3 and the shutter 1 are made to be the focus distance (f) of the lens. The liquid crystal shutter 1 is the one where transparent electrodes 1a and 1b are provided in transmissive scatter-type liquid crystal so as to scatter light at the time of voltage non-application and is provided with a characteristic for transmitting light with the arrangement of orientation at the time of voltage application. Therefore, when an angle expecting the opening of the diaphragm 4 from the lens 3 is adopted as 2θ(light receiving angle), scatter light comes out of the visual field of the CCD camera 2 and is not detected when the light scatter angle of the liquid crystal shutter 1 exceeds the light receiving angle 2θ. Therefore, a desired quenching ratio is obtained by adjusting the light receiving angle 2θthrough the use of a schlieren optical system.
