PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recording medium with good coating property and uniform thickness by specifying the loss modulus and loss tangent under specified strain and angular frequency conditions of a nonmagnetic coating material to be used to form a nonmagnetic layer adjacent to a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: A nonmagnetic coating film is formed by applying a nonmagnetic coating material prepared by dispersing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder in a solvent on a nonmagnetic supporting body which continuously travels. Then a magnetic coating material prepared by dispersing a magnetic powder and a binder is successively applied on the nonmagnetic coating film to form a magnetic coating film. In this method, the nonmagnetic coating material to form the nonmagnetic layer adjacent to the magnetic layer is prepared to have the loss modulus G" and loss tangent tan(δ) satisfying the relation of formula I and formula II under 1% strain and 100 rad/sec angular frequency conditions. Since the magnetic coating material is applied on a nonmagnetic layer in a wet state, the magnetic coating material can be applied without influenced by changes in the tension of the nonmagnetic supporting body.
