The invention relates to a method for detecting a radar target, especially a target at sea in the presence of clutter caused by waves. In order to detect a radar target within a given area, a measuring window corresponding to said area is initially formed in the video area of the radar installation and a frequency distribution is determined for all pulse height values (amplitudes) inside the measuring window. An average value and a standard deviation can be determined from said frequency distribution and are used to determine a hit recognition threshold and subsequently to decide if a pulse height value should be allocated to a radar target that is to be detected.
