According to the invention, a metal hydroxide is produced by hydrating a corresponding metal oxide in the presence of water. Processing in an autoclave is, however, excluded. The produced metal hydroxide is then treated in the autoclave under the pressure in a time necessary for gaining the required specific area that is smaller than 20.10exp(3) m2/ng, preferably smaller than 10.10exp(3) m2/ng.
