PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having improved electromagnetic conversion characteristics, in particular high density recording characteristics and excellent durability and showing an improved error rate in particular in a high density recording region. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is produced by forming a base layer which is substantially nonmagnetic and a magnetic layer having dispersion of a ferromagnetic metal fine powder or a ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite fine powder in a binder in this order on a supporting body. In this magnetic recording medium, signals of 0.2 to 2Gbit/inch<2> area recording density can be recorded. The magnetic layer has 0.05 to 0.25μm dry film thickness, 8.0×10<-3> to 1.0×10<-3> emu/cm<2> Φm, and >=1800Oe coercive force. The ferromagnetic metal fine powder essentially consists of Fe and contains at least Co, Al or Si, and Y or Nd. The ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite fine powder is a Ba-ferrite fine powder containing Fe and at least one of Co, Zn Ti and Ni. |
