1311105 Polyesterimides DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 15 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 23776/70 Heading C3R A polyesterimide containing isocyanurate groups is prepared by reacting together (a) tolylene di-isocyanate trimer, masked by a phenol, (b) trimellitic anhydride, (c) a polyol and optionally (d) a polycarboxylic acid or alkyl ester thereof, optionally in the form of a precondensate with the polyol. Components (a) and (b) first react to form a tribasic acid where R is a group of formula and this then reacts, usually at a slightly higher temperature, with the remaining component(s) to form the polyesterimide. Suitable polyearboxylic acids for component (d) include iso- and terephthalic acids, arylindanes having one carboxyl group in the indane nucleus and one in the aryl substituent, e.g. 1,1,3-trimethyl-5-carboxy - 3 - (p - carboxyphenyl)indane, and condensates (which may be formed in situ) of amines with trimellitic anhydride or itaconic acid. These condensates have the formulae where R is an optionally alkyl-substituted phenylene group or a group of formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is methylene, dimethylene, -O-, or -SO 2 -, and X is halogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl. Examples describe the use of the cresol-masked trimer as component (a), cresol also being used as the solvent, and ethylene glycol, glycerol, cyclohexane dimethanol and 2,2-dimethylpropanediol as the polyol. Lacquers are obtained by adding polymeric butyl titanate to xylene-cresol solutions of the polyesterimides. |
