PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To broaden the color reproducibility range of a color toner to its capacity limit by setting the weight ratio of magenta, cyan, and yellow toners on a transfer material per unit area at a specific ratio. SOLUTION: The ratio of toner weights per unit area on a transfer material among magenta, cyan, and yellow is controlled so that magenta : yellow equals 1:1.5 or more or cyan : yellow equals 1:1.5 or more; i.e., for magenta and cyan, an ac voltage Vpp is superimposed on a dc voltage Vdc and applied to a developing sleeve as indicated by the true line. For yellow,ΔV1dc andΔV1pp are changed as indicated by the dotted lines in the direction in which developability is increased, and the weight of a yellow toner on the transfer material per unit area is set at 1.5 times or more the weight of a magenta or cyan toner. Therefore, the range of color reproduction can be broadened to its capacity limit, and the number of colors that can be expressed can be increased.
