PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound which is a liquid crystal compound showing a dielectric constant anisotropy value, compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds and a nematic phase without damaging characteristics of a fluorine- containing liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by the formula [X<1> and X<2> are each 1,2-ethylene, 1,4-butylene, etc.; R<1> is a 1-20C alkyl (methylene is substituted with oxygen, vinylene, etc.); Y<1> is OCF2 CFH-(CF2 )n -F ((n) is 0-3) or OCF2 Cl; ring A<1> and A<2> are each 1-4-cyclohexylene ring, 1,4-cyclohexenylene ring, etc.; ring A<3> is 1,4-phenylene ring, etc.; (m) is 0 or 1] such as 4-(1,1,2,3,3,3- hexafluoropropyloxy-4'-[2-(trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl)ethyl]2'3,5-triflu orobiphenyl.
