PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially obtain the subject high purity compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals, liquid crystals or a polymerization catalysts in high yield by decarboxylating a specific halogen substituted benzenepolycarboxylic acid in the presence of a basic catalyst in an organic solvent under heating. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of formula I (Xs are each a halogen or OH and at least one X is a halogen; (m)>=1; (n) is 2-4; 3<=m+n<=6) is heated and decarboxylated in the presence of (B) an alkaline earth metal hydroxide or carbonate such as a basic catalyst in (C) an organic solvent such as ethylene glycol to give a compound of formula II (n' is 1-3; 2<=m+n'<=5). Preferably, the reaction is carried out by using 0.01-1mol of the component B based on 1mol of the component A at >=80 deg.C, especially 80-300 deg.C. |
