PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen unequal display and to obtain a beautiful display in the halftone of a high-gradation display in particular by disposing layers having the polarity component of surface energy in a specific range between electrode layers and a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: The layers are respectively disposed between pixel electrodes and a liquid crystal/resin composite and between counter electrodes and the liquid crystal/resin composite. The polarity componentγp of the surface energy of the layers is <=10dyn/cm. A substrate 1A, the electrode 2A, the layer 3A, the liquid crystal/resin composite 4, the layer 3B, the electrode 2B, a substrate 1B are successively arranged. The surfaces of the substrates in a cell are coated with layers of polyimide over the entire surface. The empty cell is assembled by using such substrates with the electrodes and, therefore, a transparent liquid mixture composed of a liquid crystal/photocuring acrylate compd. formed by uniformly dissolving nematic liquid crystals, acrylate monomer, urethane acrylate oligomer and photoreaction initiator is injected into the cell. Inorg. ionic materials, such as Na<+> and Cl<-> , are incorporated at 120PPM into the compatible mixture.
