PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to impart a large pretilt angle unlike the pretilt angle to liquid crystals at the time of initial orientation by holding the liguid crystals at a state different from an initial orientation state after injection of a liquid crystal material into a cell. SOLUTION: Two sheets of substrates 1, 1, having the same orientation state are arranged to face each other. In such a case, the substrates are so arranged that the orientation directions have the relation deviated by 90 deg. from each other in the orientation directions. The empty cell is manufactured by inserting a gap control agent between the substrates and superposing the substrates on each other. Next, the liquid crystal material 6 is injected in an iaotropic state into the empty cell. The cell is slowly cooled after the completion of the injection to rearrange the liquid crystals to a liquid crystal phase state. Next, a square wave voltage is impressed between the electrodes 2 and 2 of the upper and lower substrates 1, 1 by a voltage source 8 in the state of heating the cell to, for example, 80 deg.C by a heater. The hightemp. energization treatment is executed for, fox example, 12 hours and thereafter, the heating and the voltage impression are stopped. As a result, the large pretilt angle is stably imparted to the liquid crystals and the more uniform display is obtd. |
