Occupant airbag for motor vehicle

The airbag has a gas generator and a covering for its discharge opening. The covering hatch has a separator (14) to detach it when the airbag is actuated by the same sensors which control the airbag. The sensor (18) for the airbag can have a further sensor (40) for activating the separator. The separator can be formed by a pyrotechnic surrounding the hatch or a motor drive or pneumatic or hydraulic actuator.
