An auxiliary chamber is provided to vary the volume of the crank chamber of a 2-cycle engine and the volume of a port communicating therewith, in order to obtain a stable output over a wide range from a low rotational speed to a high rotational speed and to accomplish a high rotational speed. Unlike the prior art for accomplishing high rotational speed by advancing the exhaust timing, the power of explosion in the cylinder is not lost at the early stage through the exhaust port, and the drop of the torque in the high rotational speed range is limited to a drop of the power of explosion due to a decrease in the compression. The compression resistance in the crank chamber decreases, the acceleration of the piston is increased and the time taken for the rotational speed to reach the maximum is shortened.
