PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a formal having a long chain hydrocarbon group useful as a solvent, an additive for polymers, a reaction agent for polymers, etc. SOLUTION: This production of a long chain formal is to react a monohydric alcohol of the formula R<1> OH (R<1> is a >=12C aliphatic hydrocarbon) with a formal of the formula R<2> OCH2 OR<3> (R<2> and R<3> are each a <=4C aliphatic hydrocarbon) in the presence of a solid acid (e.g. a strongly acidic ion exchange resin containing sulfo groups) at 40-120 deg.C, carry out the reaction with removing a produced short chain alcohol of the formula R<2> OH or R<3> OH outside the reaction system by a distillation and obtain a long chain formal expressed by the formula R<1> OCH2 OR<2> or R<1> OCH2 OR<3> . |
