The friction surface e.g. for interacting male and female components of artificial hip, knee or ankle joints, is produced by applying to the surface of a prosthesis substrate of a given hardness ( alpha ) a thin layer of a material of greater hardness ( beta ) after first forming a surface of an intermediate hardness ( psi ) between the two. The intermediate layer can be created by hardening the substrate surface to a given depth, e.g. by nitridation, carbo-nitridation or diffusion. The depth of the intermediate layer is of the order of 20 - 60 mcm, while that of the surface layer is some 4 - 10 mcm, and the surface layer is obtained by depositing a material with a crystalline structure, e.g. ruby, sapphire or diamond, in vapour form.
