A control system for an automatic transmission, comprising: a clutch (C1) adapted to be applied when a forward running range is selected, for transmitting the rotation of an engine (10) to a speed change unit; a hydraulic servo (C-1) for applying the clutch when fed with an oil pressure; and a control unit (41) for controlling the oil pressure to be fed to the hydraulic servo. The control unit comprises: release means (102) for bringing a clutch to be applied when a forward running range is selected, into a substantially released state by lowering the oil pressure of a hydraulic servo (C-1) if the stop state of a vehicle is detected by stop state detecting means (10); and application means (103) for applying the clutch if the stop state of the vehicle is not detected during the operation of the release means. The application means (103) raises the oil pressure to be fed to the hydraulic servo (C-1), according to a second characteristic, in which an accelerator pedal is depressed, in preference to a first characteristic in which a brake pedal is released, if the accelerator pedal is depressed when the stop state of the vehicle is not detected as a result that the accelerator pedal is released so that the engagement of the clutch is not started.
