A method of diagnosis comprises determining genotype of a TGF- beta 1 promoter - specific polymorphisms that have been identified are at positions-800bp and -509bp. The genotype determined is then used to assess predisposition or susceptibility to a number of diseases: osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer and immune disorders.
