The transmission has two inputs, for petrol engine and electric motor, to an epicyclic gear train. The output of the epicyclic gear train drives the wheels of the vehicle. The epicyclic gear train has brakes to lock various parts of the gear train. The first brake (56) imposes a fixed speed ratio between the two motors. The second brake (60) allows the electric motor to be used to start the petrol engine and, when it is running, to allow it to drive the electric motor so it acts as a generator to charge the vehicle batteries. The third brake (58) allows the petrol engine or the electric motor to be the sole source of drive to the vehicle.
