PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and advantageously obtain methanol useful as an intermediate raw material for chemical products, a solvent, automobile fuel, etc., in high catalytic activity and high conversion of carbon monoxide under mild conditions by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen using a specific multicomponent catalyst in the presence of a solvent. SOLUTION: (C) Carbon monoxide is reacted with (D) hydrogen using (B) a catalyst composed of a divalent copper compound (B1 ) such as copper (II) chloride, copper (II) bromide or copper (II) sulfate, a platinum metal compound (B2 ) such as palladium chloride, palladium bromide, palladium sulfate, platinum chloride, platinum bromide or platinum sulfate and a metal alkoxide (B3 ) such as sodium methoxide or potassium methoxide in the presence of (A) a solvent such as ethers or glymes. |
