The device monitors for loss of concentration, esp. caused by falling asleep, by measuring physiological parameters on the body parts of the driver. The measurement values are used to control a display or signalling device. The steering element (1) contains sensors (3) which scan the hand controlling the steering element to determine physiological and/or physical parameters and the significant emotions. The sensors, which consist of electrodes which can be brought into contact with the driver's hand, are connected to a controller.
