PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit in which background elimination processing is conducted without deteriorating an image area separate precision. SOLUTION: A magnification processing means 105 magnifies electrically an image signal of a received original image in the main scanning direction. A background processing means 110 calculates a background eliminating amount based on the calculated background eliminating amount. An image area separate means 111 identifies an edge area of a character line drawing of the original image whose background is eliminated from a non-edge area. In this process, the background elimination amount is calculated by detecting a minimum density from a prescribed matrix picture element signal after shading correction and calculating a background level with a discrimination signal for the background area. Since the image correction is processed for the edge area after an undesired background signal is eliminated from the image signal, proper correction with high precision is attained. |
