Novel liquid-crystal compounds represented by general formula (1) and having a large value of permittivity anisotropy, a high voltage retention at service temperatures, a low threshold voltage, and improved compatibilities with other liquid-cristal materials at low temperatures, wherein R1 represents C1-C15 alkyl and one or more nonadjacent methylene (-CH2-) groups may be replaced by -O-, -S-, -CH=CH- or -CC-; L1, L2, L3 and L4 represent each independently H or F; X represents halogeno, CF3, OCF3, OCHF2, CN or NCS; and Z1 and Z2 represent each independently -(CH2)2-, -CH=CH-; -COO- or a covalent bond.
