The steering wheel [1] of a road vehicle has a central module [4] built around the column [2] that has inputs from manual actuator levers [12,19] for operation of such as the vehicle windscreen wipers and lighting system. One of the actuators has a lock [6] that receives the ignition key [5] and this controls an electromagnet [10] that mechanically interlocks the steering wheel and prevents rotation when the key is not inserted. Operation of the key provides a signal input to the electronic control circuitry built into the module.
