The invention concerns a tufting process using tufting needles (12; 37, 47) which are arranged in rows, can move up and down and co-operate with other tufting tools. The tufting needles are arranged in two parallel rows of identical pitch and at least one of the two rows of needles is displaced transversely to its longitudinal direction, the needles in one row being disposed offset by half a pitch relative to the needles in the other row. In this way, the distance between two rows of needles can be optimally adapted to the respective conditions in a fixed but variable manner. However, the displacement can also occur between insertions by altering the distance between the rows of needles in a controlled manner and also by displacing the rows of needles in their longitudinal direction relative to each other in a controlled manner. The process can be applied in the cut-pile mode and the loop-pile mode. The invention further concerns a tufting machine which is characterized in that it comprises two parallel needle bars (1, 2; 32, 40) of which at least one (1, 2; 32, 40) is displaceable transversely to its longitudinal direction; and in that the shank regions of the tufting needles (12; 37, 47) secured in the needle bars (1, 2; 32, 40) extend parallel to one another and have the same pitch. In addition, with this machine at least one needle bar can be displaced in its longitudinal direction relative to the other. This process and this tufting machine provide new possibilities for pattern designs in tufting operations.
