PURPOSE: To safely obtain the subject compound under mild conditions without using a dangerous azide compound by reacting nitriles with hydrazine and then converting the resultant amidrazone into a tetrazole. CONSTITUTION: Nitriles of the formula R<1> CN (R<1> is phenyl which may be substituted with a halogen, etc.) are reacted with hydrazine or its salt in the presence (absence) of a catalyst to provide an amidrazone of formula I or II. The resultant amidrazone without isolation thereof is then reacted with a nitrous acid compound of the formula YNO2 (Y is H, an alkali metal, etc.) to afford the objective compound of formula III or IV. When, e.g. 2-chlorobenzonitrile is used as the nitriles, 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-tetrazole is obtained. The reaction of the nitriles with the hydrazine is preferably carried out at -50 to +100 deg.C and the conversion into the tetrazole is preferably conducted at -50 to +50 deg.C. Alcoholates, hydrogen sulfide, etc. are preferred as the catalyst.
|
