SURGICAL WIRE BASKET EXTRACTOR

The present invention is a surgical extractor (10) for removing objects from a body, such as kidney stones and gall stones. The extractor includes a handle (11) at a proximal end (12) of the extractor with a slider (14) for operation by a physician. At the distal end (16) the extractor includes a plurality of wires (24) with each wire comprising a first portion having an individual strand (22), and a second portion (24) comprising a plurality of filaments. The use of such a basket promotes capture of objects within the body by having widely spaced wires in the first section, retention of such objects in the second section by multiplying the number of contacts with entrapped object, and improved selective release of such objects without any deleterious effect on the reliability or size of the extractor.
