PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful for medicines and electronic materials, while retaining optical purity of a raw material in a few processes and economically by subjecting an optically active acyl halide and an aryl compound to Friedel-Crafts reaction at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION: (A) A compound of the formula R<1> (R<2> )*CHCOX (R<1> and R<2> are mutually different 1-6C alkyls; * C is an asymmetric carbon; X is a halogen) and (B) a compound of the formulaϕ<1> -Y-Z (ϕ<1> is phenyl; Y is a single bond, phenylene, cyclohexylene, pyrimidilene or dioxylene; Z is H, a halogen, carboxyl or CN) are subjected to Friedel-Crafts reaction in the presence of (C) a Lewis acid catalyst at <=-5 deg.C, especially -10 to 15 deg.C to give the objective compound of the formula R<1> (R<2> )*CHCO-ϕ<2> -Y-Z (ϕ<2> is phenylene).
