Contact tray apparatus and method

An improved downcomer tray assembly is for a gas/liq. contact tower of the type having a downcomer above a tray inlet area adjacent a tray active area for the liq. flow. The downcomer has a semi-conical lower region (103) forming a vapour tunnel and a liq. holding wall ending in discharge openings (107) above the inlet area. The inlet area has a number of upstanding venting chambers (51a) for the passage of vapour up through the vapour tunnel. Also claimed is a process of venting vapour through a region of a vapour/liq. contact tower with a downcomer positioned above an inlet area of a tray. Also claimed is a downcomer tray assembly for a gas/liq. contact tower. Also claimed is a further process of venting vapour.
