The device contains two sensors (14,15) which detect the length of paper (P). The first sensor (14) is arranged along the paper feed path between a paper magazine (3) and a housing (1) of the processing machine. The second sensor is arranged after a second feed roller arrangement (7). A first feed roller arrangement (6) is driven in the normal direction of rotation to feed the length of paper to a paper processing unit if the first sensor detects the paper. The feed roller arrangement is halted if both sensors detect the absence of paper.
