898,809. Spheroidal graphite cast iron. FORD MOTOR CO. Feb. 7, 1961 [June 13, 1960], No. 4504/61. Class 72. A process of producing spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises providing a cavity in the bottom refractory lining of a ladle, placing an innoculating material, which is at least in part volatile, in the cavity, covering the innoculating material with a ferrous substance, and pouring in the molten iron to be treated. As shown, a ladle has a cavity 1a formed in the bottom lining 1 and into this cavity is placed an innoculant 2, e.g. a magnesium-iron alloy, a graphitising agent 3, e.g. ferro silicon, and the whole covered with steel scrap 4, e.g. boiler plate punchings. The molten iron to be treated is then poured in and melts the steel scrap allowing the graphitising agent and the innoculant to react with the metal.
|
