A method of reducing the content of undesirable by-products in carbendazim (methyl benzimidazol)-2-ylcarbamate) of formula (I) prepd. from o-phenylenediamine (II) and methyl cyanocarbamate involves treating the reaction prod. with a reactive carbonyl cpd. (III).
