A method of making a refrigerator comprises nesting an inner liner 20 in an outer casing 10, installing a pre-assembled and pretested refrigeration unit 32 in the refrigerator and then expanding plastic particles in the space between the liner and casing to form a foamed plastics insulation in which parts of the refrigeration unit are embedded. The compressor 34 and condenser 36 of the refrigeration unit are located in a machinery compartment 12 and the suction and liquid lines 40a, 40b, which are in heat exchange relationship, extend through a groove 44 in casing 10 and through the space between liner and casing before entering the freezing compartment 24. The evaporator 38 is located vertically at the back of compartment 24 and lines 40a, b are arranged at the front edge of the cabinet so that they are accessible upon removal of the breaker strip 30. The assembled cabinet is placed face downwardly in a mould (Fig. 3, not shown) and the foamable particles introduced through the back thereof. Curing is subsequently effected in an oven. The above method may be employed in the construction of a single compartment freezer having a plurality of refrigerating shelves and a wire and tube condenser mounted on the rear wall thereof (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown). |
