A weighing unit (32, fig. 3) is provided for determining the residual mass of the cigarette (20), with which the intermittently smoked cigarette, during the draw phase, is connected with the smoking machine (4). The residual mass of the cigarette (120) is continuously established during the rest phase, including the ash, resulting when the smoking machine is decoupled.
